ICSI is a procedure where with the help of an instrument called micromanipulator, a single sperm is injected into a single egg for fertilization to take place.

It is especially done in severe male factor infertility (very low sperm count, low motility, low normal looking sperms are present, or where sperms are surgically extracted from the male’s testes or epididymis directly-PESA/TESA/TESE/Micro TESE). The difference between IVF and ICSI is that in IVF, sperms and egg are put together in same petri-dish so that they meet and fertilize “naturally”, but in cases where the above factors are present, single sperm is injected into the single egg, so that fertilization is achieved.
